To continue, we address the limitations of scientific studies on the loss of\nweight and the concrete impacts of the weight-centered approach. For this article,\nseveral scientific literature reviews were consulted; you will find them at\nEND.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c0917ae elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c0917ae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn science, to establish the facts, it is necessary to rely on scientific studies (which\ntest a hypothesis using experiments and\/or observations on the\nground). If you search the databases for studies concluding that a loss\nof weight improves health, you will find some, but several of them have\nlimitations in their design and methodology.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d4ebde elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7d4ebde\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The studies and their limits\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d35c26c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d35c26c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tScientific studies testing the hypothesis that weight loss improves\nhealth have quite varied methodologies. Some offer an intervention (ex:\ndieting) while others observe without intervening, some have some\ndozens of participants while others have several tens of thousands (4) and\nsome offer one plan while others offer another. Indicators of\nhealth measured also differ from one study to another: blood cholesterol,\nblood sugar, blood pressure, etc. However, all these variants influence the\nconclusions that can be drawn and can make it difficult to compare studies\nbetween them.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d1c464 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d1c464\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In addition to variability, the design and analysis of studies have certain limitations<br \/>non negligable:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Duration:<\/strong> several studies last less than a year: is the weight loss<br \/>maintained after a year? What about health improvements? As a professional<br \/>health, it is appropriate to propose an intervention that improves health on the<br \/>long term.<\/li><li><strong>Dropouts:<\/strong> many participants drop out prematurely without being<br \/>always taken into account: why do they leave? In longer term studies<br \/>(4 years or more) of a review of the literature consulted (2), the percentage of<br \/>participants attending the follow-up appointment is on average only<br \/>33%&#8230;<\/li><li><strong>Maintenance:<\/strong> weight loss, sometimes quite limited (a few kg), is often not<br \/>not maintained during the study, even if it is of short duration. In those of<br \/>more than a year, in general, the more time passes, the more the kg recovers.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-09fc5a0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"09fc5a0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If we seek to prove that it is weight loss itself that improves health,<br \/>care must be taken to take into account the other variables that can influence this<br \/>last. Unfortunately, several studies ignore it in the analysis of their<br \/>results. Here are some of the variables in question:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Lifestyles:<\/strong> the composition of the diet and the physical activity offered<br \/>in the study may have an impact on the health of participants regardless of the<br \/>weight. For example, if participants have to eat more fruits and vegetables,<br \/>only this change can decrease their risk of suffering from diseases<br \/>chronicles\u2026<br \/><br \/><\/li><li><strong>Discrimination, including fatphobia:<\/strong> the heavier people are, the more they<br \/>suffer from grossophobia, which negatively influences health<br \/>regardless of the intervention.<\/li><li><strong>Socio-economic status and social support<\/strong> influence stress levels<br \/>and health. Having better social support helps to have better health.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-692cd10 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"692cd10\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn short, the link between weight and health being very complex, research does not allow us to\nso far to prove beyond any doubt that weight loss alone\nimproves health and will improve it in the long run.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3da0c92 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3da0c92\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The weight-based approach\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8bf084c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8bf084c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe majority of studies take into account the physical impact of recommending the loss\nof weight, but do not question certain concrete impacts in the daily lives of\nfolks. Many healthcare professionals take a weight-based approach,\nthat is to say, aiming for their patients to be at their \u201chealthy weight\u201d, with very\ngood intentions, but this intervention can have several negative impacts.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24bae16 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"24bae16\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThis is particularly true when the intervention leads the person to seek a\nexcessive weight loss. Every body has a weight range at which it is\nnaturally created to be (called natural weight). The latter may be outside the\nBMI category of \u201chealthy weight\u201d and is determined by a long list of factors,\nincluding genetics, drugs used, socio-economic environment,\ndiet, physical activity, restriction history and many more.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c782de elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7c782de\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhen the body loses weight beyond its natural weight range, it does everything\nin its power to bring it back (like a thermostat): increased hunger, cravings\nricher foods, compulsions (overeating), insomnia, decreased\nenergy expenditure, etc. Also, the restriction necessary to achieve this leads to\nsignificant psychological impacts: obsession with food, dysmorphia\nbody, depression, social isolation and reduced self-esteem.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d08613 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d08613\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\nIs it a beneficial intervention if not only its impact on health is not\nproven beyond any doubt but it also harms mental health?
